DC Studios Opts Out of Promoting Upcoming Films at San Diego Comic-Con

DC Studios Chooses Silence for San Diego Comic-Con 2024

In a surprising move, both Marvel Studios and DC Studios are skipping the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) this year. While Marvel has officially announced its absence, DC Studios is reportedly planning to refrain from promoting their latest films and projects at the event as well.

Why the Silence? Timing and Strategic Choices

According to industry insiders, DC Studios is holding back on Comic-Con promotions because of their release schedule. “SDCC is just two weeks after Superman hits theaters, so the studio has decided not to make any major announcements at that time,” explained The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision newsletter.
Additionally, the upcoming Supergirl film isn’t scheduled for release until June 26, 2026, leading DC to prefer a more reserved approach and wait for a more impactful promotional window.

Focus on Peacemaker and Other Projects

Despite the overall silence, DC Studios is reportedly putting significant energy into promoting Peacemaker, the popular series starring John Cena, created by DC co-chief James Gunn. The show is expected to have a prominent presence at SDCC, signaling strong confidence in the upcoming second season, which premieres on August 21.

Sources suggest there may be a dedicated Hall H panel for Peacemaker, potentially featuring James Gunn, Peter Safran (DC Studios co-heads), and cast members such as John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, Robert Patrick, and others. This panel could serve as a major highlight despite the absence of broader DC film announcements.

Upcoming Shows and Potential Announcements

Beyond Peacemaker, fans might get a glimpse of the upcoming HBO Max series Lanterns. Currently in production, this show stars Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as Hal Jordan and John Stewart, respectively. A panel for Lanterns at SDCC would be a welcome update for DC fans eager for new content.

We will learn more about DC Studios’ plans as the convention dates—running from July 24 to July 27—approach. Fans are hopeful that some surprises or reveals could still be announced closer to the event.

Connections to the DC Universe and Future Projects

During a recent presentation, the Peacemaker Season 2 trailer revealed that the season will feature two versions of the titular character. Additionally, James Gunn and John Cena appeared together at CCXP Mexico last week, where Gunn teased that the mystery of the dual Peacemakers will be addressed in the first episode of the new season.

Gunn also shared insights into how Peacemaker Season 2 ties into his upcoming Superman film and other DC Universe projects. He explained that the story revolves around the QUC (Quantum Unfolding Chamber), a piece of technology introduced in the first season, which will play a crucial role in the new episodes.

“We see more of the QUC in Superman, and it will connect various characters from across the DC Universe,” Gunn said. “Fans can expect appearances from characters like Isabela, Nathan, and Sean, as well as several surprises, including a potential major cameo near the season’s end.”

Peacemaker Season 2 is set to launch on HBO Max on August 21, promising an exciting continuation of the series and further links to the expanding DC Universe.
