Ewan McGregor Shares How the Long Way Docuseries Has Transformed His Life

The Journey Continues: Long Way Home Explores New Adventures

The latest installment in the acclaimed series that began with 2004’s Long Way Round, titled Long Way Home, airs weekly on Apple TV+. This series follows close friends Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman on yet another motorcycle adventure. This time, their journey takes them from McGregor’s home in Scotland to Boorman’s in England, but not via the direct route. Instead, they embark on a challenging and scenic route through fifteen countries, full of unexpected twists and turns.

Behind the Scenes: A Glimpse of the Upcoming Episode

During today’s IGN Live event, a new clip from the next episode was unveiled, giving viewers a taste of what’s to come. The footage shows McGregor and Boorman enjoying a bright, sunny day on the road—a refreshing contrast considering the frequent rain and tough weather conditions they’ve faced during this trip. Their camaraderie and resilience shine through, capturing the essence of their adventure.

McGregor and Boorman Reflect on the Series’ Impact

In conversations with IGN, both actors shared heartfelt insights about the series. McGregor described Long Way as “a very, very important part of my life.” He explained that the four trips they’ve completed have led to incredible experiences, new friendships, and personal growth beyond what they could have imagined at the outset. “The Long Way trips have become something truly special to me,” he added.

The Challenges and Rewards of Filming

While McGregor finds the series deeply fulfilling, Boorman pointed out that filming these adventures is often more demanding than expected. Recalling their early days, he said, “We trained extensively for Long Way Round, but back then, we had no idea what we were doing. Now, after all these years, we still feel like we’re figuring things out.” Boorman shared a piece of advice from a former SAS soldier: “If you can get to the start line, the adventure part is the easy bit. The hard work is in the preparation.”

McGregor emphasized that, unlike acting, filming the series feels like a different kind of passion. “It’s not acting; it’s a unique experience I love very much,” he affirmed.

The Unexpected Side of Adventure

Boorman added that despite their extensive experience, surprises still catch them off guard. He recounted a humorous incident at the start of Long Way Home, where they left Ewan’s house with vintage bikes and all the right gear, only to be caught in a four-week rainstorm because they wore the wrong clothes. Boorman joked, “You’d think after 20 years, we’d learn something. But no, the rain still surprised us!”

Memorable Destinations and Personal Highlights

Both McGregor and Boorman highlighted Mongolia from their first trip as one of the most impactful locations. Boorman described Mongolia as “an extraordinary place that tested us on every level.”

McGregor shares a personal story about Mongolia, recalling the initial hardships caused by weather and terrain, which led to frustration. They even considered taking a detour into Russia to avoid the difficult conditions. But thanks to encouragement from their producer, David Alexanian, they persisted. McGregor reflects on their decision: “If we had turned left, I never would have met Jamyan, a young girl who became like family. I adopted her with my ex-wife, Eve. That moment changed everything.”

The Power of Choice and Unexpected Encounters

McGregor emphasizes how small decisions can have profound impacts. Reflecting on their journey, he notes, “A simple choice to go straight or left in Mongolia shaped our lives in ways we never anticipated.”

Blending Acting and Adventure

Unlike many actors who keep their personal adventures separate from their professional roles, McGregor enjoys blending his cinematic persona with his travels. During the trip, he humorously pretended to use the Force to open an elevator door, showcasing his playful side. He admitted, “I don’t think about it much; it’s just a habit to reach out and try to open automatic doors.”

What’s Next for the Series

New episodes of Long Way Home premiere every Friday on Apple TV+, offering viewers more inspiring stories and breathtaking scenery from the world’s most remote locations.
