A Nostalgic Return to Fortnite’s Origins
Long before Fortnite became a global battle royale sensation, Epic Games’ flagship shooter started out as a cooperative Player versus Environment (PVE) experience. Known as Save the World, this mode tasked players with teaming up to fend off waves of zombies and survive together. After years of evolving into the competitive genre we know today, Fortnite is now revisiting its original gameplay style with a fresh, Lego-themed PVE mode called Lego Fortnite Expeditions.
Introducing Lego Fortnite Expeditions
This new mode offers a cooperative experience for up to four players, blending the playful Lego aesthetic with the strategic gameplay reminiscent of the PlayStation hit Helldivers. Players embark on mission-based adventures from the central Academy hub, where they can select from a variety of combat missions set across three distinct locations. Completing these missions not only advances your progress but also contributes to global Team Projects that unlock buffs for all players and enable the unlocking of new mission types. Additionally, players can relax at the Academy by completing Assignments given by popular Fortnite characters.
Gameplay Features and Hero Classes
Lego Fortnite Expeditions launches with three unique map locations and three hero classes that players can upgrade. These include:
- Shadow Caller: Capable of flight and ranged explosive attacks, with the ability to switch into Shadow Form to avoid damage.
- The Hunter: Armed with the Bull’s-eye Blade, which increases damage output and improves attack accuracy for the entire team.
- Rift Ripper: Has the power to warp around the battlefield, fire rift crystals, and support teammates with buffs.
Each hero class offers a distinct playstyle, encouraging players to experiment and develop strategies that suit their preferred approach to combat.
Integration with Fortnite’s Broader Universe
Epic Games envisions Expeditions as a permanent addition to Fortnite’s lineup of modes, making it the third major Lego experience after Lego Odyssey and Lego Brick Life. Unlike those standalone adventures, Expeditions will incorporate elements from the main Battle Royale storyline, featuring the game’s central villain, Mask Maker Daigo, and aligning with the ongoing narrative arc.
Storyline and Crossovers
At launch, players will face off against Mask Maker Daigo and his minions while forming alliances with familiar Battle Royale heroes, including Jonesy and Hope. The mode’s trailer hints at ongoing integration with the current season’s storyline, showcasing the season’s logo, Super, and crossover character Superman. This suggests that Lego Fortnite Expeditions may evolve to reflect future themes and crossovers within the Battle Royale universe.
Current Season and Upcoming Releases
Fortnite is currently in the early stages of its new superhero-themed season, coming hot on the heels of the explosive Star Wars Death Star event. This week is particularly busy, with the debut of a new 32-player battle royale mode called Blitz Royale, designed for quick matches, especially on mobile devices. Both Blitz Royale and Lego Fortnite Expeditions are set to launch on June 18, offering players fresh ways to enjoy the game’s expanding universe.
