Hideo Kojima Reveals He Made Major Changes to Death Stranding 2 After Playtesters Found It “Too Good”

Game Developer Hideo Kojima Adjusts Death Stranding 2 Based on Playtest Feedback

Hideo Kojima, the visionary creator behind Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, reportedly decided to overhaul significant parts of the game midway through development. The reason? Playtesters found the game “too good,” and Kojima wanted to avoid creating something that felt too mainstream or predictable.

Insights from Music Composer Yoann “Woodkid” Lemoine

This revelation comes from Yoann “Woodkid” Lemoine, who collaborated closely with Kojima on the game’s soundtrack. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Lemoine shared details about his creative process and the challenges of composing music for a game that evolves dynamically as players progress.

The Surprise of Over-Praising and Its Implications

Interestingly, Lemoine also discussed Kojima’s candidness about the “problem” of players liking Death Stranding 2 too much. Kojima explained that when a game is universally adored, it might be a sign that the work is too mainstream or comfortable, diluting its emotional impact. As he put it, “If everyone likes your work, it means it’s conventional and pre-digested for audiences.”

Making Games That Challenge Expectations

Kojima shared that he wants players to initially dislike certain elements, only to grow to love them later. He believes this process of shifting perceptions creates a more meaningful connection with the game. “I want people to end up loving things they didn’t like at first because that’s where true passion develops,” he said.

Woodkid noted that this philosophy was a valuable lesson for him as well. Instead of trying to please everyone, Kojima aims to push boundaries and evoke strong emotional reactions, encouraging players to think and feel deeply.

Upcoming Releases and Projects

Fans don’t have to wait long — Death Stranding 2 is scheduled for release on June 26, 2025. In addition to the game, Kojima is working on a live-action Death Stranding film in collaboration with A24, as well as an animated series based on the franchise. His creative pursuits also include a PlayStation-exclusive espionage action game called Physint, and he has expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming Xbox-published OD, which he describes as “a game I have always wanted to make.”

Additional Exciting Announcements

Recently, the U.S. Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) teased that players in Death Stranding 2 might have the ability to bash objects to death with a guitar, hinting at the game’s quirky and inventive gameplay elements.
