IO Interactive Confirms Hitman Is Still Going Strong Amid New Projects

Hitman Franchise Remains Active Despite Silence

Although fans haven’t seen a new mainline Hitman game since 2023, IO Interactive is far from abandoning Agent 47. The studio has a busy lineup of projects, including the upcoming James Bond game, 007: First Light, and the highly anticipated MindsEye. In addition to these ventures, IO Interactive recently announced a cooperative multiplayer mode for the Hitman series, showing that the franchise still holds a special place in their creative plans.

While major new entries in the Hitman saga have been on hiatus, the studio’s leadership assures fans that the series is far from finished. To clarify the studio’s future intentions, I spoke with Hakan Abrak, CEO of IO Interactive, during a recent interview following the reveal of 007: First Light. His message was clear: Agent 47 is very much still part of the studio’s plans, and Hitman will continue to evolve in new ways.

Reaffirming Commitment to Hitman

“The Hitman series is definitely not done,” Abrak stated confidently. “We’re not finished with Hitman. Despite working on other IPs like Project Fantasy and the James Bond license, our roots remain firmly planted in the Hitman universe. We are proud, grateful, and excited about the franchise’s future.”

He also shared that upcoming projects might take different shapes but will undoubtedly feature more Hitman content. Notably, the studio has announced a new co-op mode—a dream project for Abrak—which signals ongoing development and innovation within the franchise.

Distinctive Styles: Bond vs. Hitman

Our conversation naturally turned to the differences between Agent 47 and James Bond. Although IO Interactive’s expertise in espionage and stealth games led to their being trusted with the Bond license, the two characters embody very different styles. Bond leans more toward high-octane action, while Agent 47 specializes in stealth, disguise, and meticulous planning.

Additionally, the tone and humor of their games vary significantly. The Hitman series is known for its quirky, often silly humor—Agent 47 has been seen in a flamingo mascot suit, after all—whereas Bond’s humor is more refined, typically British, and designed to complement the character’s suave, confident persona.

What to Expect from 007: First Light

Regarding the upcoming 007: First Light, Abrak assured fans that the game will retain some of the charm and flavor of the Hitman series but will also have its own unique tone. “Getting the humor right is very important,” he explained. “In Denmark, we love dark humor and silliness because it lightens the seriousness of being an assassin. Bond, however, relies on a more sophisticated, British humor that supports his personality and energy.”

The game will emphasize more action, with a structure that allows for bigger spectacle moments, exotic vehicles, and a sense of pacing that breathes—more open and dynamic compared to the meticulous planning typical of Hitman. While both games share some DNA, 007: First Light aims to deliver a fresh experience that feels true to the iconic spy’s world, rather than simply re-skinning Hitman’s gameplay.

Distinctive Gameplay Dynamics

“Bond gameplay is more impulsive and spontaneous,” Abrak noted. “It’s less about detailed planning and more about reacting to situations as they unfold. The game will feature moments of spectacle, action, and a more linear progression, but still include some of IO’s signature elements.”

He emphasized that this approach is designed to create a true Bond fantasy, capturing the essence of the character’s daring and reckless charm. While the game will incorporate some mechanics familiar to Hitman fans, it will also stand apart as a distinct experience—something uniquely reflective of the legendary spy’s world.

“We want players to see that IO Interactive is behind the project, but also to feel that this is a different kind of game—an ultimate Bond experience that’s true to the franchise’s spirit.”
