Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Boosts Street Fighter 6 Sales to Over 5 Million Two Years Post-Release

Street Fighter 6 Surpasses 5 Million Copies Sold, Fueled by Nintendo Switch 2 Release

Capcom has announced that Street Fighter 6 has now sold over five million copies, marking a significant milestone two years after its initial launch. This sales growth was notably accelerated by the game’s recent release on the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2.

Expanding Reach with Nintendo Switch 2

In an effort to broaden the game’s audience, Capcom launched a version of Street Fighter 6 optimized specifically for the Switch 2. The new edition offers exclusive gameplay modes tailored for the console’s capabilities, including features that leverage the gyro controls of the Joy-Con controllers. Additionally, the Switch 2 version supports crossplay, allowing players on different platforms to compete seamlessly and increasing the pool of available opponents for online matchmaking.

Sales Milestones and Future Goals

Capcom highlighted that these strategic updates have contributed significantly to the game’s widespread appeal and global sales expansion. As of now, Street Fighter 6 has surpassed the 5 million mark, up from 4 million copies sold in September 2024. The company initially aimed to exceed the sales of Street Fighter 5, which sold approximately 7.8 million copies, and has set an ambitious goal of surpassing 10 million units over its lifetime.

Historical Context and Competitive Landscape

To put these figures into perspective, classic titles like Street Fighter 2 Turbo sold around 4.1 million copies on the SNES, and the original Street Fighter 2 reached 6.3 million. Despite strong sales, Street Fighter 6 still has a way to go to beat its predecessor.

Another major competitor in the fighting game market is Mortal Kombat 1, which also sold approximately 5 million copies since its release in September 2023. While Mortal Kombat is typically the top-selling franchise in the genre, its latest installment has been considered a sales disappointment, prompting developer NetherRealm to shift focus to upcoming projects.

Ongoing Support and Future Content

Capcom continues to back Street Fighter 6 into its third year with a robust lineup of downloadable content (DLC). Recently, they revealed four new characters: Sagat, arriving this summer; C. Viper, launching this fall; Alex, expected in early spring 2026; and Ingrid, coming in late spring 2026. These announcements were highlighted in a trailer featuring pro wrestler Kenny Omega, who dressed up as each new fighter.

Critical Acclaim

IGN’s review of Street Fighter 6 awarded the game a high score of 9 out of 10, praising its extensive features, roster of 18 characters, innovative mechanics, and attention to detail. The review emphasized that it is the most feature-rich installment in the series at launch and a revitalization of the classic fighting game formula.
