Nintendo Takes Strong Action Against Switch 2 Piracy Devices as Users Face Online Bans

Nintendo Launches Aggressive Crackdown on Switch 2 Piracy Devices

Recently, a wave of reports has emerged from users of the Nintendo Switch 2 console claiming that they have been abruptly banned from accessing the console’s online features. Many of these users believe that their use of the so-called MIG Switch cartridge is the primary原因 for these restrictions.

What is the MIG Switch?

The MIG Switch is a specialized flash cartridge designed to store and run copied Nintendo Switch 1 games. Although Nintendo has a clear stance against unauthorized copies and piracy, many users argue that they are simply playing backups of their legally purchased titles. Nonetheless, the use of this device appears to have serious consequences for Switch 2 owners.

The Consequences of Using the MIG Switch on Switch 2

Users who have inserted the MIG Switch into their Switch 2 report that they are now experiencing bans from Nintendo’s online services. These bans disable access to multiplayer features, the Nintendo eShop, and other online services. Many gamers are warning others about the potential risks of using the device, emphasizing that the repercussions can be severe and immediate.

Personal Accounts and Evidence

One user shared on social media that their Switch 2 was banned after attempting to use the MIG Switch with backups of their own cartridges — a process they believed to be legal. “My Switch 2 test was banned after using the MIG Switch with perfectly legal dumps of my own cartridges, so it seems Nintendo can detect something,” they wrote.

Similarly, a Reddit user recounted trying the MIG Switch once to play a backup of a game they owned. They reported that the game failed to load properly and that the console possibly flagged the device for a ban. “It just showed the game title and refused to load. It tried to download a title update, and that was it,” they explained. “I’ve been playing with a legitimate cartridge ever since.”

What Happens When Your Console Is Banned?

Owners with active bans encounter a warning message when attempting to access online features: “Error Code: 2124-4508. The use of online services on this console is currently restricted by Nintendo.”

On YouTube, a gaming channel has showcased a banned Switch 2 and confirmed that simply signing in with another Nintendo account does not lift the restriction. The ban appears to be applied at the console level, not just tied to a specific user account.

Offline Play Still Possible

Interestingly, even after a ban, the console can still operate in offline mode. Nintendo has not yet fully bricked or disabled the device, allowing users to continue playing single-player games without internet access for the time being.

Nintendo’s Warning and Policy Changes

Back in May, ahead of the Switch 2’s release, Nintendo updated its Nintendo Account Agreement. The new terms clearly state that attempting to use hardware or software that deviates from official guidelines could result in permanent suspension of Nintendo services or even rendering the device unusable.

This recent wave of bans is therefore not entirely unexpected, though many users are still surprised by the severity of the crackdown.

Community Reactions and Ongoing Developments

One frustrated user on Reddit expressed confusion over their console being banned without clear reason, admitting they only tried the MIG Switch out of curiosity. Nintendo has yet to issue an official statement on the matter, but multiple reports suggest that the company is actively monitoring and enforcing its policies against piracy devices.

For more updates, Nintendo has not publicly disclosed specific technical details about how they detect these devices, but the crackdown indicates a firm stance against unauthorized modifications.
